The Facts: Benson, who will be an unrestricted free agent, had his scheduled trial for assault in Travis County court postponed until Aug. 29 after his attorneys asked for more time in preparing for their case. The delay also gives both sides to talk about a possible plea deal.
Diehards Line:
In case you missed it, Benson, who could be sentenced to up to a year in jail if convicted, was arrested and charged with assault on June 29, 2010, after his role in an altercation at an Austin, Texas, bar on May 30 of last year. He could have faced suspension under the league’s personal conduct policy but was cleared by commissioner Roger Goodell. This is definitely a situation Fantasy Football owners will want to follow up on. Assuming he returns to the Bengals, Benson would likely be a focal point of the offense being installed by new OC Jay Gruden. For what it's worth, Enquirer staffer Joe Reedy notes that Aug. 29 falls on a Monday and would be three days before the Bengals preseason finale against Indianapolis (assuming the lockout is lifted in a timely manner).
