The Facts: Following up on the ongoing story. ... GM Bruce Allen spoke at a charity banquet on Saturday night, and was predictably peppered with questions about his team's blockbuster trade up in the draft. Allen was also asked about the future of Davis, whom the Redskins franchise tagged on March 2. "We franchised Fred because he was our most valuable free agent. We're hoping to get a deal done with him," Allen said. "A longer-term deal."
Diehards Line:As PFT's Evan Silva suggests, making a long-term commitment to Davis could be perceived as risky. Davis was suspended for the final four games of the 2011 season after failing a drug test just after the lockout ended. At the time, SI.com's Jim Trotter reported that Davis' positive test was "at least" his third career violation of the NFL's substance abuse policy. Thus, another violation would put Davis at risk of an eight-game, or even season-long suspension. It's safe to say that possibility will be a factor in negotiations.
