The Facts: Following up on the ongoing story. ... Saints players reported for voluntary offseason workouts on Monday without HC Sean Payton, whose season-long suspension began after midnight. Brees, who had the franchise tag applied to him over the offseason, did not report to workouts, as was expected.
Diehards Line:According to NFL Network's Albert Breer, Brees was in New York on Monday to meet with NFL officials, presumably about the Saints "bounty" case. The league still has yet to announce punishments for the players involved in the program, which resulted in the suspension of Sean Payton and the indefinite ban of former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams. ... Brees, who hasn't signed his franchise tender, isn't expected to take part in team activities until he gets a long-term deal. As SI.com's Peter King suggested this morning, If Brees isn't in training camp Aug. 1, we'll have a story. Given the QB's knowledge of the scheme, the Saints will be fine on offense -- assuming he'll be signed to a one-year or multiyear deal by six weeks before the start of the season.
