The Facts: 49ers GM Trent Baalke acknowledged Thursday that Smith will likely be shopped this offseason. The Arizona Cardinals are emerging as one team interested in acquiring the 49ers' backup quarterback. According to the Arizona Republic, there are decision-makers within the organization who are high on Smith.

Diehards Line:While Smith could "make a beeline to Arizona" if released, Republic beat writer Kent Somers doubts the Cardinals will actively pursue a trade (perhaps the Kevin Kolb debacle left a bad taste in the organization's mouth). ... But if the Cardinals do end up parlaying that interest into a trade offer, would the 49ers be willing to deal Smith to a division rival? Assuming Arizona general manager Steve Keim makes the best offer, NFL.com's Chris Wesseling believes the Niners can make it work. 49ers HC Jim Harbaugh and IC Greg Roman designed a scheme that took advantage of Smith's strengths. It doesn't take a leap of faith to believe Harbaugh and defensive coordinator Vic Fangio could also design a game plan to exploit Smith's weaknesses.
