On the day Lovie Smith stepped up his rhetoric about Benson's holdout, both sides stepped up their efforts to get the first-round pick into training camp, returning to the bargaining table after an eight-day hiatus. That's how many days of practice Benson has missed as his agent and management have failed to negotiate, a silence broken Sunday with an exchange of phone calls.

Smith went further by telling reporters that his personal contact with Benson makes his relationship with the rookie running back unique.
