The Facts:
Cortez, who has kicked for four other NFL teams, was signed after working out for the Cowboys on Aug. 6. Wade Richey worked out but wasn't signed. The Cowboys waived injured kicker Brett Visintainer, who Bill Parcells said had a back injury.

Cortez was brought on board to provide competition for incubmbent Billy Cundiff, the team's kicker the past three seasons. It should be noted, however, that Cortez hasn't attempted a field goal since 2002 with Washington, when he made 23-of-32 that season.
