GM: Cedric Benson Has Bears' Final Offer
(8/18 2:43 PT)

The Facts:
Having completed training camp without him, the Bears are prepared to move on without Benson. GM Jerry Angelo released a statement Thursday that said the team has made its "final offer" to Benson, the only first-round pick yet to agree to terms with his club. "We want to make it abundantly clear that the Bears have made their best and final offer to Benson," the statement said. "No dollars are left on the bargaining table, and at this point the only contract discussions that will be entertained will be reflective of the considerable loss of value to the club created by the player's extended absence." Reported by ChicagoBears.com

Fantasy Football Diehards Line:
Sounds like somebody is making a push to get this done. ... The fourth overall pick in the draft and the second running back, Benson missed all 26 days of training camp due to his holdout. Angelo refused to reveal terms of the team's offer. ... More on Benson as developments warrant.

Kirk Bouyelas' View:
While it would be great to have Benson sign with the Bears, it's not the end of the world. If you look back over the last few years, you'll see that both Edgerrin James and Ladainian Tomlinson were hold outs in their rookie seasons. Nevertheless, both James and Tomlinson went on to have successful rookie campaigns. At this point, Benson is the only first-round pick that hasn't agreed to terms with his club. With the other rookies coming to terms with their contracts, the bar has been set for Benson. The only thing that both sides can be haggling over is the guarenteed money. I suspect that Benson will sign a deal within the next couple of weeks and everything will be forgotten.
