Gates, who had been holding out for a new contract, did not report to camp by the Chargers' 12:30 p.m. PDT deadline Saturday, and the team announced it will place him on the roster exempt list. The move means Gates will not play in the Chargers' next three games, including their season-opening contest vs. Dallas on September 11.

According to team officials, the two sides negotiated throughout the morning but could not reach an agreement on years or compensation but they but remain hopeful of reaching an agreement soon. In the meantime, we'll remind you that Gates must be active at least six weeks to become an unrestricted free agent after the season and all involved believe his return is more likely to come sooner rather than later. ...
