The Cowboys traded a conditional seventh-round pick to Jacksonville for Marler, further proof Bill Parcells isn't sold on Jose Cortez despite his perfect field-goal percentage in two preseason games. But Marler, who made 20-of-33 field goals for the Jaguars in 2003, failed his physical on Saturday, nullifying the trade.

So the search will likely continue. But this gives Cortez even more opportunities to gain a firmer grip on this kicking job. Cortez became the leading candidate for the job after Billy Cundiff, the Cowboys' kicker for the past three years, severely strained his right quadriceps muscle during the final full training camp practice on Aug. 20 and was released through an injury settlement this week.
