The verdict is still out for at least another day or two while the Panthers wait to see how Stephen Davis' knee responds following last night's loss to the Steelers. DeShaun Foster, who last year returned from the same procedure Davis is, told him Friday would be his big day, when Davis would learn how his knee reacts.

Again, we're not saying he can't return to play effectively this year, but the fact we're awaiting to see how Davis' knee responds to five snaps of game action leads us remind you that even if he's the opening-day starter next week (which is by no meanws etched in stone), it's no fun spending each week wondering what kind of shape that knee is in from week to week. Ask anybody who owned Davis last fall. ... Meanwhile, we'll have more on Davis throughout the weekend.
