Steve Smith Considered Retirement Due To Wife's Illness
(6/17 1:15 PT)

The Facts:
Smith has had a lot on his mind this offseason that is completely unrelated to trade rumors. Speaking at his football camp Friday, Smith said that he briefly considered retirement when his wife was ill this offseason, according to Steve Reed of the Gaston Gazette.  Reported by Profootballtalk.com

Fantasy Football Diehards Line:
Smith said it was a “scary time” and they believed his wife had Lupus, but she is fine now and he plans to play in 2011. Smith avoided a question from a camper Friday when asked if he’d be willing to play in Carolina. ... Meanwhile, Cam Newton is in attendance at the camp lending a hand. After Smith declined to questions on whether he wants to return to the Panthers, Newton made a pitch for him to return to the team. According to the Associated Press, Newton told a child he wanted to play for Carolina because it had the top pick "and I wanted to have someone great to throw to. ..." Asked later if he said that in hopes of swaying Smith, Newton smiled and replied, "Hopefully, he got the message."
