Report: Economics Of New CBA Are Essentially Done
(7/15 10:27 PT)

The Facts:
Following up on the ongoing -- and increasingly optimistic -- story. ... Albert Breer of NFL.com reports the economics of a new deal between the NFL and NFLPA are essentially “done” with a few small details left. Breer writes that the players will initially get 47-48 percent of the revenue split. Other issues remaining include the legacy fund for retirees, judicial oversight, and player safety. Greg A. Bedard of the Boston Globe says that the “football” issues are going slower than expected. Reported by Profootballtalk.com

Fantasy Football Diehards Line:
As reported last night, the biggest stumbling block had been the rookie wage scale. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, first-round picks will now sign four-year deals, with options for a fifth, that will decrease their money 40-50 percent from last year. Veterans will get the money saved. ... Schefter also reports the new CBA will be good for will be 7 to 10 years. ... As for the "football" issues Bedard mentions? One of them is the owners' request for a right of first refusal on up to three veteran free agents in 2011, an issue on which the players reportedly won't relent. The parties must work on language to settle the Brady antitrust suit and any plaintiff damages, as well as address the looming decision by Judge David Doty in the television rights fee case. Issues of workers' compensation and injury guarantees also are still being negotiated. And no deal can be complete until the owners and players address the issue of whether now, and how, the NFL Players Association re-constitutes as a labor union. ... Still, as PFT's Gregg Rosenthal notes, there wouldn’t have been a lockout if not for the economic differences between the side. They have apparently agreed how to divide up their $9 billion. And that's good news. ... Stay tuned for more.
