Lions Will Have Kicking Competition In Training Camp
(7/26 8:45 PT)

The Facts:
For the first time since they drafted Jason Hanson two decades ago, the Detroit Lions will have a legitimate training-camp battle for the kicking job. Dave Rayner, who made 13 of 16 field goals in Hanson's absence last year, agreed to re-sign with the team on a one-year contract today. Free agents cannot officially sign until 6 p.m. Friday. Reported by the Detroit Free Press

Fantasy Football Diehards Line:
“That’s kind of what I’ve heard,” Rayner said about battling with Hanson for the kicking job. “Obviously, he’s got a lot of years behind him but at the same time I feel pretty confident in my abilities and where I’m at physically, and may the best man win, I guess, is what it’s going to come down to.” Rayner bounced between the Indianapolis Colts, Green Bay Packers, Kansas City Chiefs, San Diego Chargers and Cincinnati Bengals in his first five NFL seasons. Hanson is 41, entering his 20th NFL season and has been one of the most consistent kickers in the league. But he also had minor knee surgery each of the last two training camps and missed the final eight games with a knee injury last year.
