The Giants announced a long-anticipated contract extension for coach Tom Coughlin on Wednesday. “As we said after the season, we strongly believe in Tom. We believe in the job he has done,” owner John Mara said.

Coughlin called coaching the Giants the “fulfillment of a dream. The extension means he’ll avoid entering the final year of his contract. ... Still, as PFT's Gregg Rosenthal notes, this isn’t a long-term contract. Multiple New York-area reports indicate it’s a one-year extension through 2012. The extension avoids a problematic “lame duck” season for the 64-year old Coughlin, no matter what he does in 2012.
