The players needed a majority vote to recertify. They collected signed union cards all week and had enough by Saturday to finish the procedure. The move was necessary in order to conclude
the labor agreement reached last week. The union will be required to negotiate with the NFL several outstanding items, such as drug testing, player discipline, disability and pension programs. The 2011 league year is scheduled to Thursday (Aug. 4). That can't happen until the deal is final.
