The Facts:
After a frenzy of activity elsewhere in recent days, the Cardinals are turning to an effort to sign Fitzgerald to a new contract. GM Rod Graves said on Monday that talks are beginning this week and he believes a new deal can be reached before Arizona’s season opener on Sept. 11. “We want Larry to end his career as an Arizona Cardinal,” Graves told the AP, “and we are prepared to make him the highest-paid player in team history and one of the highest-paid players in the NFL.”

Fantasy Football Diehards Line:
Fitzgerald joked after Monday morning’s workout that he was worried Arizona’s money had dried up after all the recent signings. But he praised the team’s personnel moves, saying it’s the most active he’s seen the franchise since he came to the team as a 20-year-old rookie in 2004. “I don’t want to leave Arizona,” Fitzgerald said. “This is where I started, I feel like this is my family here.” He said he didn’t want to talk about the contract, though. But as AP sports writer Bob Baum notes, Fitzgerald is keenly aware of his value, though. He is in the final year of a four-year, $40 million contract that included $30 million guaranteed. Not yet 28, he is going to sign his third major contract before he reaches 30. All involved believe the arrival of Kevin Kolb -- considered a major upgrade at QB -- will be a factor. Fitzgerald so wanted Kolb that the two worked out together during the NFL lockout.
