Bears Envision Marion Barber As Short-Yardage Man
(8/2 10:18 PT)

The Facts:
Following up on a previous item. ... Barber, who compiled 4,368 rushing yards and 47 touchdowns in six seasons with the Cowboys, brings a power game to Chicago. The Bears envision him as the ideal short-yardage back, a role once designated to Chester Taylor last season, when the offense converted just 11 of 23 third-and-1 attempts. Reported by the Chicago Tribune

Fantasy Football Diehards Line:
The 5-11, 220-pound Barber signed his contract Sunday but was not on the practice field as an observer. Receiver Roy Williams, his former teammate in Dallas, spoke on Barber's behalf. "That power, that strength, that Monster of the Midway mentality. … If he played defense, he would fit right in," Williams said. "He's going to teach these backs -- even [Matt] Forte, who's still a young guy who is doing his thing -- some things they probably haven't seen before in terms practice habits. He's going to be good. ..." We'll go ahead and suggest that if Barber is good this year, it'll require a major turnaround -- something we don't see happening. In other words, he might be good enough to cost Taylor his roster spot, but he's not ready to cut into Forte's totals any more than Taylor was.
