Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports that the Chargers are in contract talks to retain Tolbert, and negotiations have reached a “critical stage.”

Per Acee, the team wants to know soon whether Tolbert, an unrestricted free agent, is “in or out” and may threaten to move on to former Chief Jackie Battle if a deal isn’t reached in short order. As PFT notes, Tolbert is a considerably more valuable back than Battle, though, so the leverage game isn't likely to fool Tolbert’s agents. That said, Tolbert doesn't appear to be drawing intense interest from around the league. The only team he visited, Kansas City, signed Peyton Hillis and this might be a case where no move is the best move of all. ... Staty tuned.
