The Bears remain in communication with Forte, but GM Phil Emery couldn't offer a signal Friday that the sides have made progress on a long-term contract. "We continue to work with Matt and his agent in that effort," Emery said. "I'm not going to get into details, but we continue to work with each other to find common ground."

Forte was assigned the team's franchise tag and has made it clear he's looking for the team to demonstrate a desire to work out a long-term deal. RBs Arian Foster and Marshawn Lynch recently got new contracts from the Texans and Seahawks, respectively, but neither had the franchise tag and Emery wouldn't say if their deals will shape talks with Forte. He also wouldn't comment on the possibility of a holdout by Forte. "Obviously, we want Matt to be a Bear for the long term," he said. "We're working toward that resolution." They better be.
