More Confirmation That Matt Flynn Will Have To Compete For No. 1 Job
(3/19 6:13 PT)

The Facts:
Following up on the ongoing story. ... So he's going to be the starter, right? That's the next question that follows the addition of Flynn after the sides agreed to a three-year contract. "I don't know that," HC Pete Carroll said Monday in a conference call with Seattle-area reporters. "We're very clear on how we delivered the message. We now have the opportunity to have an open competition." Reported by the Seattle Times

Fantasy Football Diehards Line:
As Times staffer Danny O'Neil notes, that's the key word for Carroll, one that he used when the Seahawks acquired Charlie Whitehurst in 2010 and one he's repeated for the past two years as Seattle coach. ... Worth noting, the Seahawks asked if Flynn would be willing to throw at his workout upon arrival for his visit in Seattle, and he had no problem. He got outfitted from the equipment room, and went out with an impressive showing. "Went into a throwing session with him, and asked him to do a variety of things that we had questions about," Carroll said. "He's very impressive, and he has improved in many ways to where he is now. ..." As O'Neil reminded readers that observation isn't based so much on Carroll's first-hand impression, but GM John Schneider's history with Flynn. Schneider was with the Packers' front office when Green Bay chose him in the seventh round of the draft, and was with Green Bay for Flynn's first two seasons. That gave him a baseline comparison for how much Flynn has developed over the previous two years, and Carroll indicated the report was very positive. "He is a better athlete and better thrower and stronger," Carroll said.
