Peterson tore ligaments in his left knee in the Vikings' second-to-last game last season and missed the finale. Frazier said at the NFL Scouting Combine last month that Peterson had to run in a swimming pool before he could begin running on land. Peterson is "just beginning to run this week on land," Frazier said Wednesday. "It's too early right now to say he's absolutely going to make the first game but so far he's on target with everything we've asked him to do." After saying that the team would "love to have him back Opening Day," Frazier cautioned that more will be known about Peterson's status in another week or two. Frazier said he doesn't want to put a specific date on when Peterson will be at full speed, but he does believe Peterson is making the necessary progress and perhaps even progressing more quickly than they expected. ... Peterson
had surgery to repair the injured knee on Dec. 30. The Vikings have been optimistic since December that the back would be able to return to the field by the beginning of the 2012 season.
