Fantasy Football Diehards Line:
Although financial numbers were not immediately available, Smith was due to earn $7.75 million in 2012, and the Panthers likely will pay more than that amount, including guaranteed money up front, for this season. According to PFW's Eric Edholm, Smith’s deal is believed to be structured similarly to that of the one signed by Reggie Wayne with the Colts earlier this offseason, in terms of his guaranteed money and base salaries for the next three seasons. ... Smith caught 79 passes for 1,394 yards and seven touchdowns last season and was instrumental in the development of rookie quarterback Cam Newton. That’s probably why the Panthers deemed it a good idea to make sure Smith sticks around for a while. His contract was set to expire after this next season.
