The Facts:
Brees said he's "optimistic" a deal can be reached with the Saints before Monday's deadline for players given franchise tags to sign multi-year contracts. "I'm an eternal optimist, so I'm still very confident a deal will get done by Monday," Brees said at the ESPY Awards on Wednesday night. "In a lot of cases, it does go down to the wire, and you need a stopping point in order to bring everyone together and make sure it can get done."

Fantasy Football Diehards Line:
Brees is right. We've said it over and over. Nothing will get done until there is true urgency to get it done (as opposed to the artificial pressures brought on by media speculation or fan unrest). With an actual deadline -- and consequences to go with it, both sides are likely to intensify their efforts. Brees plans to sit out training camp if a multi-year deal isn't reached. And depth at QB is an issue. Backup Chase Daniel (hairline fracture in his right thumb) was injured in practice on June 13 and might not be full strength at the start of camp. If Brees doesn't report, that could leave the Saints' first-team offense under the direction of Sean Canfield or veteran backup Luke McCown, who signed in June. So, the clock is ticking and Monday's deadline draws near. ... Stay tuned.
