How quickly can he read a defense? How fast can he run his route, cutting in and out of those breaks? Can he get downfield rapidly, creating separation from a cornerback to open up a window for the QB. And most importantly, how quickly can he develop chemistry with the player throwing him passes? “You want to know sooner than later,” receiver Legedu Naanee said when asked about the impending decision the coach staff must make, picking between veteran free agent David Garrard, returning starter Matt Moore and first-round pick Ryan Tannehill.

Miami's coaches have two weeks of training camp practices, and four weeks of exhibition games to come to a decision. But the Dolphins receivers hope it won't take that long. "At some point we got to start working with one guy as opposed to the rest,” said Brian Hartline. According to Sun-Sentinel staffer Omar Kelly, in an effort facilitate the chemistry building process during the offseason program the Dolphins assigned each QB a set of receivers, and had those individuals work with their specific quarterback the majority of the time. However, continuing this process throughout training camp could become complicated, if not problematic considering it might handicap a certain QB if he’s paired with a batch of inferior receivers. “There is a lot of receivers out there,” Garrard said, referring to the 12 receivers Miami’s taking into training camp. “The ones that you know are going to be out there you’ve got to do things with them after (practice) to make sure you’re fine tuning. ... We have to keep working at it trying to get that rapport with them. ..." Recent reports have suggested that Garrard might have the edge. We'll find out soon enough if he can hold onto it.
