previous item. ... The Chargers added veteran depth at RB when Battle agreed to terms on a one-year contract he will formally sign next week. "We look at him as a three-way player, but his focus will be on special teams first, running back second and fullback third," GM A.J. Smith said. "He's a guy we're going to throw in the mix and see how it all pans out."

That means Battle will fight for a backup role behind Ryan Mathews in what has become a crowded backfield. The Chargers have a maximum of two backup running back spots on the roster, and those players will be expected to contribute on special teams. The team already has Ronnie Brown and hybrid back Le'Ron McClain who can carry the ball. Curtis Brinkley, draftee Rock Baker and undrafted back Michael Hayes, among others, will compete for a roster spot. Brown will likely be first off the bench, meaning Battle must prove himself in other ways. Battle, a longtime Kansas City Chief, visited the Chargers in March but left without a contract. According to Times staffer Scott Bair, Battle returns with no guarantee that he'll make the final roster.
