Nine months after a concussion ended his 2012 season, Best is still waiting to be cleared for contact. HC Jim Schwartz said that could happen today, “but there still is a hurdle to go."

“It’s not just one single thing, it’s sort of a whole battery and a whole process,” Schwartz explained. “There’s a lot of people involved in that. That’s just not one singular point of contact. He has input from a lot of experts around the country, not just our team doctors but national experts and things like that. ...” Best missed the final 10 games last year after suffering his second concussion of the season in an October loss to the San Francisco 49ers. In spring workouts, Best said he'd be ready for the season and took a full complement of first-team reps during no-contact practices. But Schwartz said he'll “just have to wait and see” when asked how confident he was Best would be available to play this year. Once Best is cleared for contact, the Lions will take a cautious approach with his workload. Schwartz said Best will need “a little bit of contact” to get ready for the season, but acknowledged “we’re not going to probably be doing live goal-line (drills) with him in training camp. ...” Again, we're nine months out from Best's most recent concussion; his current status is a legitimate concern.
