The Facts:
With the deadline to strike a deal firmly in the past, Welker is focused on looking forward. “Everyone tried,” Welker said. “I tried. They tried. It just didn’t work out. It’s in the past, and we’ve moved on to this season, which we expect to be a good one. We’re working toward it and working hard to have a great season this year.”

Fantasy Football Diehards Line:
Welker will play the 2012 season under the franchise tag, which is worth $9.5 million in guaranteed money. Franchised players had until July 16 to reach an extension, and because that didn’t happen, Welker and the Patriots can’t negotiate a new deal until after the season. The possibility exists that the Patriots could franchise Welker again next year, which would cost at least $11.4 million. ... As Herald staffer Jeff Howe suggested, Welker will surely continue to hear the questions about his contract, as he did last season, but he claimed it wouldn’t affect him. There's reason to believe him. Just look at 2011, for instance. He hauled in a league-best 122 receptions for career highs of 1,569 yards and nine touchdowns despite the looming contract situation.
