O'Connell will temporarily replace Whitehurst, who strained his medial collateral ligament on Thursday and is expected to be out for two weeks. The Chargers have practiced with only two QBs since Saturday, after initial Whitehurst replacement Kyle Boller told the team that he would retire after training with the team on Friday. O'Connell was drafted in the third round by the New England Patriots in 2008. He didn't stick there, and since has had stops with the Detroit Lions, Miami Dolphins and New York Jets.
