The Facts:
It doesn't mean his right shoulder is ready to take contact. It doesn't mean he will be able to start the season, his goal all along. But Mathews returned to practice Monday, catching passes out of the backfield in individual drills during the 20-minute period open to media.

Fantasy Football Diehards Line:
According to SDU-T staffer Michael Gehlken, the extent to which Mathews participated Monday is unclear; however, it's the first time he's practiced since breaking his clavicle Aug. 9 on his first career of the preseason. Mathews had surgery the next day, and the team gave him a four-to-six week timetable to recover. Mathews began leg workouts days removed surgery. He was seen last week doing sprints uphill, carrying the football in his right hand. All indications have been Mathews will miss the start of the season. That said, he's clearly making progress. ... Assume Ronnie Brown will get the Week 1 start (with Curtis Brinkley backing him) until further notice.
