The Facts:
With tight end Aaron Hernandez expected to miss at least four weeks with an ankle injury, the New England Patriots signed free agent Kellen Winslow to a one-year deal. Winslow visited New England in the preseason, however concerns about his knees reportedly played a role in the team's decision to wait until now to sign him. Under league rules, the veteran tight end's 2012 salary ($3.3M) would have been guaranteed had he been on the roster for Week 1. If for some reason Winslow can't play, the team can release him at any time and will only owe him for the time he was on the roster. Winslow was a surprise cut by the Seattle Seahawks just eight days before the start of the regular season. It appears that Winslow get a chance to fill in for Hernandez opposite Rob Gronkowski in the two tight end set formation New England runs the majority of time. Veteran backup Daniel Fells missed the first two games with a shin injury and Visanthe Shiancoe is on injured reserve/recall with a troublesome hamstring.

Fantasy Football Diehards Line:
Troublesome knees or not, Winslow looked pretty good during preseason action for the Seahawks. That said, it's entirely too soon to consider Winslow for fantasy purposes.
