The Facts:
It may just be semantics, but Romeo Crennel still is refraining from naming Charlie Frye his starting QB. "The position is open for competition, just like every position on our team is open for competition," Crennel said Thursday. Speculation is that Trent Dilfer has expressed frustration to the coaches about not getting his starting job back. He ended the season with a knee injury.

Crennel's public statements could be a way of salving Dilfer's ego. Crennel said he's not sure if the competition will be settled before training camp or if it will extend through the preseason games. Sometimes when guys compete, the cream rises to the top," he said. "If it rises quickly, then we'll name him quickly."
