Season Over! Chargers RB Ryan Mathews breaks his left clavicle in loss to Panthers
(12/17 10:5 PT)

The Facts:
Following up on a previous item, the San Diego Chargers announced running back Ryan Mathews sustained a broken left clavicle that will end his season in Sundays loss to the Carolina Panthers. Mathews left the game in the second quarter with what was initially called a shoulder injury. He carried four times for 22 yards and caught three passes for eight yards prior to his departure. Ronnie Brown had been ruled out with a hamstring injury, so Jackie Battle and Curtis Brinkley shared backfield duties in Mathews absence. Reported by Allie Fontana on Twitter

Fantasy Football Diehards Line:
Mathews began his 2012 campaign by breaking his right collarbone on his first carry in the preseason opener against the Green Bay Packers in August. The injury cost him the rest of the preseason and the first two regular-season games. It's very "Mathews-like" that his season ends with an injury, though breaking his left collarbone is borderline comical. While soon-to-be former head coach Norv Turner promoted Mathews as a "workhorse" and central to the team's offense, he didn't show much faith in the third year back. Mathews carried just 184 timers for 704 yards and one touchdown. He was rarely involved as a pass-catcher out of the backfield or used near the goal line. Fantasy owners who drafted Mathews with an early-round pick and stuck with him this season are no doubt disappointed by his underwhelming performance.
