The move comes in the wake of reporting by ESPN’s Adam Schefter that the Bears had already asked other teams permission to interview head coaching candidates. Smith has missed the playoffs five of the last six seasons, and is entering the final season of his contract. He was not hired by current GM Phil Emery, who at least gave Smith some time to prove himself. Now, Emery will find an on-field boss he feels more comfortable working with.
