The Facts:
Following up on the
ongoing story. ... On the second day of his employment as coach of the Eagles, Chip Kelly addressed the first challenge he’ll face from a personnel standpoint. Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Kelly and Vick met on Friday. However, there has been no resolution regarding Vick’s status with the team, and no answer is expected in the immediate future.

Fantasy Football Diehards Line:
You mean Kelly didn't make an immediate decision on the team's future at quarterback within days of deciding to take the job? Wow. That seems like a remarkably reasonable approach. ... True, a decision needs to be made, sooner than later. On February 6, $3 million of Vick’s $15.5 million base salary becomes fully guaranteed. Presumably, the Eagles won’t be inclined to guarantee that payment if they plan to eventually cut or trade him. That said, they can’t trade Vick until March 12, when the next league year opens. So it's probably okay to give it a day or two -- or more even -- before we start looking for resolution. It might be worth noting that Kelly told CSNPhilly.com's Reuben Frank there are a lot of misconceptions about the quarterback position in his high-powered spread offense. Kelly's QB doesn’t have to be a crazy scrambler. He’s not going to carry the ball 20 times a game. He doesn’t need to be the next RG3 or Colin Kaepernick. He just needs to be good. “[There’s] perception vs. reality,” Kelly said. “My quarterback last year [at Oregon], Darren Thomas, who is up in the CFL, we played in 14 games, he ran for 200 yards. ... We’ve run zone-read concepts, man-read concepts, where it’s a mathematical game. If there is an extra defender in the box, your quarterback can read him and by controlling him and reading him he is basically blocking him.” Frank reminded readers it was Patriots coach Bill Belichick who reached out to Kelly recently to learn about his offensive concepts. Belichick’s quarterback, obviously, is no RG3. So it’s all about finding a talented quarterback, not necessarily a mobile, athletic one.
