The Panthers released Davis, DT Brentson Buckner, and returner Rod Smart, the team announced Wednesday. "Stephen set a physical tone for us in 2003 that played an important part in our run to the Super Bowl," Fox said. "We were fortunate to have him. He is unselfish and a great person as well as teammate to have on your football team."

Carolina's overall backfield strategy remains unsettled. Although team officials used their transition tag on DeShaun Foster, they'll let him test the market before deciding to match any offers he receives. Eric Shelton, a second-round pick last year, is waiting in the wings but there are some good backs available in free agency the team might consider. Still, they're unlikely to go after high-profile prospects like Shaun Alexander and Edgerrin James.
