Lions Looking To Extend Matthew Stafford
(2/10 12:22 PT)

The Facts:
The Lions’ next big move of the off-season could be giving Stafford a new deal worth $100 million or more, but GM Martin Mayhew said today contract discussions with his quarterback are still in their infancy. “My thought on that is that we’re going to try to extend him,” Mayhew said. “There hasn’t been a whole lot of dialogue about it at this point, but I think that’s coming.”  Reported by the Detroit Free Press

Fantasy Football Diehards Line:
Stafford is entering the fifth year of a six-year, $72-million contract he signed as the No. 1 overall pick in 2009, but after restructuring the deal twice in recent seasons he’s due to count $20.8 million against the salary cap in 2013. Last year, the Lions gave Calvin Johnson an eight-year deal worth $132 million rather than go through a contract year with him taking up $21.1 million of cap room. Stafford’s new deal likely will eclipse Johnson’s average of $16 million per season, though as Free Press sports writer Dave Birkett notes, talks could get complicated with several quarterbacks in line for new contracts this off-season, including Super Bowl MVP Joe Flacco.
