McKenzie Reiterates: Palmer And Pryor Will Compete For Starting Job
(2/24 12:13 PT)

The Facts:
The Raiders have one quarterback with (for now) a $13 million base salary and another with a third-year minimum base salary. GM Reggie McKenzie said on Friday’s ProFootballTalk that either could be the team’s starter this year. "We’re going to have a competition not only at that position, we’re going to have it up front on the O-line, we’re going to have it everywhere and that’s why we want to open this thing to, we want to open the doors for everybody, just come out and compete, whatever happens happens,” McKenzie said.  Reported by Profootballtalk.com

Fantasy Football Diehards Line:
Asked to clarify whether that means Terrelle Pryor could be the Week 1 starter over Carson Palmer, McKenzie minced no words: “Well if he wins the job, he could be and that’s what competition is all about. ...” As PFT's Mike Florio points out, since both players are under contract for 2013, McKenzie and the Raiders don’t have to worry about using the franchise tag on either guy in the coming nine days. And as we've previously noted, with players like Colin Kaepernick, Robert Griffin III, Cam Newton and Russell Wilson taking the league by storm the past two seasons, the team's interest in seeing what the athletic Pryor might be capable of seems like a good idea. Remember: New OC Greg Olson said he and the Raiders don't know enough about Pryor yet to know how good he can be and they'd "like to find that out." It's also safe to say we know exactly what Palmer, who passed for more than 4,000 yards last season, is.
