The Facts:
HC Tom Coughlin said "no question" Cruz is a player he'd like to have in the Giants program long-term, but the Giants' talks with the receiver's camp for a long-term deal have so far not been fruitful. Coughlin admitted the uncertainty around Cruz's Giants future is difficult for a coach. "I like to think that I can control everything, and that I can have something to do with making sure that something gets done that I think would be beneficial to everyone," Coughlin said Monday. "And certainly I believe that about Victor. We want Victor to be a Giant until the end of his career, but obviously he and his people, his agents, they’ve got to make that call. It’s a little bit frustrating in that you’d like to have it done, that’s all."

In Coughlin's new book released Monday, "Earn the Right to Win," one of the players he uses as a proud example of adhering to his methods for success is receiver Cruz. The former undrafted free agent set a franchise record for single-season receiving yards in 2011 by doing just what the Giants coach preaches: Working hard when no one is watching. ... Cruz is a restricted free agent, so the Giants can keep him for this season with a tender. When asked if they can count on having Cruz in 2013, Coughlin said, "I think so." The sides had been working on a long-term deal to keep Cruz with the team long-term. Negotiations were tabled during the season, and last month, co-owner John Mara said Cruz's camp was asking for too much money at that point in time. ... Stay tuned.
