The Facts:
When McCardell failed to report to the Bucs' mandatory mini-camp in June, the team sent a letter insisting he return half of his $2 million signing bonus. When Dwight Smith did not report to training camp, he was excused by coach Jon Gruden. As a result, McCardell's reps say the Bucs violated the collective bargaining agreement by failing to discipline both players in a similar manner.

An ugly situation continues to get uglier. ... Agent Gary Uberstine plans to present "credible evidence and testimony" to an arbitrator that Smith's three-day absence was contract-related. ... McCardell is being fined $5,000 per day, which has grown to $100,000. He also could forfeit one game check for each preseason game missed. ... Stay tuned.
