The veteran QB, who hasn’t played a game since 2010, said he was willing to be a backup somewhere but was attracted to the Jets because of the shot he would have at the starting gig. “They told me I’d have a chance to compete for the starting job,” Garrard said Tuesday in a conference call with reporters. “When I saw an opportunity to be able to compete for a job I thought that was good for me and my family.”

The nine-year veteran is part of John Idzik’s plan to encourage competition at every position, namely quarterback. He joins Mark Sanchez, Greg McElroy and (for now) Tim Tebow in that competition. Garrard said he spoke to Sanchez when he worked out for the Jets. “He seems to be an upstanding guy,” Garrard said of Sanchez. “It’s all about competition. I understand that and I believe he understands that.” Asked if he thought he would win the QB competition, Garrard wouldn’t commit or guarantee anything. “I just expect to go out and compete,” he said. ... Garrard has amassed a career 85.8 passer rating in his nine seasons in Jacksonville, throwing for 89 and 54 interceptions along the way.
