ongoing story. ... Peyton Manning is the Broncos QB today in no small part because of his good friend Brandon Stokley’s presence in Denver. So Manning didn't push for the Broncos to sign Welker from free agency. This was John Elway’s deal. Yes, Elway, the Broncos front-office boss, called Manning on Monday. Yes, Manning among other Bronco players honored Elway’s request and made a recruiting call to Welker. “I asked Peyton about it yesterday to make sure he was on board,’’ Elway said.

Stokley came back to play one more season, at 36 years old, with the Broncos in 2012 in large part because Manning let management know his friend is one of the best slot receivers to play in the league. Stokley came through, too, with 45 catches, a 12.1-yard average, and 5 touchdowns. But nobody is going to mistake him for Welker -- especially a player with Manning's understanding of the game. Heck, even Stokley knows it. Asked earlier Wednesday about the Broncos’ pursuit of Welker, Stokley said: “I think it would be a great move if (the Broncos) got him. I think he would be a great fit here. ...” And he will be.
