The Facts:
With or without an extension, the Pats didn’t have to cut anyone to fit under the $94.5 million salary cap. Their cap number stood at roughly $90 million. Still, team officials have to decide whether they believe Dillon’s injury-marred 2005 represents the rest of his career, or if he’ll bounce back to something approximating his 1,000-yard form.

Fantasy Football Diehards Line:
Although they have plenty of cap room, Dillon's 2006 salary complicates matters. He counts $4.3 million against the salary cap if the Patriots keep him, and $5.4 million against if they release him. It's worth noting there are a number of backs in the draft with first-round grades -- but with the 21st pick, the Pats might prefer to go after a lower-profile free agent like the Steelers' Verron Haynes.
