The Facts:
Smith doesn’t feel the pressure one might expect considering TE Dennis Pitta is out for the season and WR Anquan Boldin is now catching passes for the 49ers. Smith is being counted on to increase his contribution as the most accomplished downfield target from last season left for quarterback Joe Flacco. “No, I never feel pressure at all,” Smith said. “My job doesn't change. Obviously, I expect more out of myself performance-wise whether they were there or not."

Smith downplayed the notion that the offense would be dramatically altered from a strategic standpoint without Pitta. “I think that it's kind of overrated,” said Smith, who caught 49 passes last season for 855 yards and eight touchdowns. “Pitta was definitely Joe's security blanket a lot of key points. Someone is down, the next one has to step up. Guys get hurt each and every day in this league. ...” Include Smith on the list of those who need to step up. We expect him to do just that. Because a 50-catch season isn't going to get it done this year.
