The Ravens kept the door ajar on the outside chance Pitta is able to walk though it in 2013. Wednesday, the Ravens officially placed Pitta on the on the injured reserve-designated for return list, Wednesday, after he underwent surgery to repair a dislocated hip during the summer.

Last week HC John Harbaugh said Pitta was progressing positively and that the team saw "optimism" in the tight end's rehab. Theoretically, the designation means he would be eligible to play Week 9. Using the one-time designation on a player initially expected to miss the entire season does come with a risk. If another important player (Joe Flacco, Ray Rice, Terrell Suggs, etc.) goes down early in the season the Ravens would have too keep him on the active roster or lose him for the season.
