The Colts have taken one step to possibly compensate for Mike Vanderjagt's loss (as an unrestricted free agent) by re-signing Cortez to a one-year deal. Bruce Tollner, Cortez's agent, said it's his client's understanding he will be given an opportunity to succeed Vanderjagt.

Statistically speaking, Cortez faces a daunting task, considering Vanderjagt is the most accurate kicker in NFL history. ... Cortez signed with the Colts last December and handled kickoffs for the final three regular-season games and the playoffs. He has converted 53-of-74 field goal attempts in his career (71.6 percent). Last season, prior to joining the Colts, he hit 12-of-17 attempts while spending time with three teams.
