The Facts:
Peterson acknowledged Sunday that his body is breaking down as the Vikings limp to the finish line of a lost season. He was relegated to the sideline in the second half of Minnesota's 42-14 loss to the Bengals, a mutual decision Peterson and coach Leslie Frazier made with the game out of hand. "I'm going to scratch, I'm going to bite, do whatever it takes to help our team. But today was one of those days," said Peterson, who finished with 45 yards on 11 carries.

"I didn't feel perfect, but I felt like I was able to contribute. When we got down early, (Frazier) pulled me out. I didn't like it. But when you really think about it, being down 28 points, is the risk really worth it?" As Pioneer-Press staffer Brian Murphy notes, this was the same Peterson who was visibly upset in the Metrodome press box after being informed hours before kickoff last weekend against Philadelphia that he would be inactive because of a sprained right foot, a move that still chafed him Friday. But Peterson also has been dealing with a groin injury that surfaced in October. It clearly has sapped his explosiveness and confidence. "I was kind of hesitant," he said about Sunday's performance. "That's not the way I play. When he pulled me, it was a good call. Mentally, I'm there and I'm in tune. My body's just not responding the way I want it to." Peterson's longest run was 11 yards. A banged-up Peterson finishes the season against the Detroit Lions, who boasted the fourth-best run defense entering play Sunday. Assuming Peterson plays.
