Calvin Johnson Probably Will Need Surgery
(12/30 2:6 PT)

The Facts:
Before he was fired on Monday, Jim Schwartz broke character after his news conference following Sunday’s 14-13 season-ending loss to the Vikings when he stopped and volunteered that Johnson “probably” will need postseason knee surgery. Reported by the Detroit Free Press

Fantasy Football Diehards Line:
Johnson did not play Sunday because of a right knee injury he originally suffered in September and has bothered him all year. The Lions (7-9) struggled with their downfield passing attack in Johnson’s absence and lost their fourth straight game by blowing a fourth-quarter lead. “Not anything major,” Schwartz said. “And that’s no different than probably a dozen players on the team.” Johnson finished with 1,492 yards receiving and 12 touchdowns in 14 games. Last season, he broke Jerry Rice’s NFL single-season receiving record with 1,964 yards. Deadspin.com reported last week that Johnson suffered a partially torn posterior cruciate ligament against the Bears, and ESPN reported Sunday that Johnson might need surgery to “clean out loose bodies in his knee.” Johnson has been having his knee drained off and on since his injury, but he declined comment on his health earlier this week and said Sunday he did not know where reports he might need surgery came from. “I always try to get out there (and play), but it wouldn’t do any good to go out there hobbling around,” Johnson said.
