Lombardi, whose grandfather was Green Bay Packers coach Vince Lombardi, has been with the New Orleans Saints the last seven years, including the last five as the quarterbacks coach. His only experience as an offensive coordinator came at Mercyhurst College from 2002-05. Lombardi, who was born nine months after his grandfather died of cancer in 1970, played tight end at Air Force from 1991-93. The move comes seven days after Caldwell was hired. The Lions' coach had announced last week that Teryl Austin, previously the Baltimore Ravens' secondary coach, will be his defensive coordinator.
