The Facts:
The Chargers are not expected to re-sign Alexander according to Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune.

As the Redzone.org suggests, this is a shame for all of the parties involved. Alexander was a terrific player at the University of Missouri and has been a terrific player in the NFL, on the rare occasions his health would allow it. He had first-round talent but ended up as an undrafted free agent with the St. Louis Rams because of those health issues. Alexander has had seven knee surgeries -- five on his left, two on his right (including
another earlier this year) -- and may never play again. It is possible that some team could take a flyer on his talent in a one-year deal for the league minimum but Gehlken says the chances of that team being the Chargers are "very low."
