Jets Mum On Mark Sanchez's Future In New York
(2/20 9:24 PT)

The Facts:
Following up on the ongoing story. ... The Jets' brass was predictably mum Thursday regarding Sanchez's future with the team. "We'll see how it plays out in the end," coach Rex Ryan said at the NFL Combine. Reported by the Newark Star-Ledger

Fantasy Football Diehards Line:
As Star-Ledger staffer Darryl Slater reiterated, it seems likely that Sanchez is nearing the end of his tenure with the Jets. They drafted him fifth overall in 2009 and started him immediately. He missed all of the 2013 season after injuring his right (throwing) shoulder when the Jets decided to play him in the fourth quarter of a preseason game against the Giants, behind an offensive line of backups. Sanchez's torn labrum required season-ending surgery (he also had knee surgery and is said to be recovering nicely from both procedures). Sanchez is due to count $13.1 million against the Jets' salary cap in 2014. But he would count just $4.8 million if the Jets decide to release or trade him. Sanchez has three years remaining on his contract. Rookie Geno Smith started in 2013, but struggled at times and did not do enough to prove himself, just yet, as the Jets' long-term answer at quarterback. GM John Idzik has said he would look into acquiring another quarterback during this offseason -- either in free agency or through the draft. Meanwhile, if the Jets do part ways with Sanchez, they almost certainly will do it by March 25, when he has a $2 million roster bonus due.
